Animals on Campus

Heartland Community College welcomes individuals who use service dogs as a part of their access to campus programs and activities. Service dogs that are individually trained to perform tasks for a person with a disability are permitted on campus with the student.  

Service Dogs on Campus

Service dogs may accompany their handler across campus, including classrooms, offices, and common spaces, as long as they are trained to perform tasks related to disability.

For support or to share information about your service dog, you are encouraged to communicate the service animal with SAAS.

To ensure safe and respectful environment for all students, service dogs must demonstrate appropriate behaviors at all times.  

Handlers are responsible for ensuring that their animal:

  • Is under direct control at all times
  • Is housebroken
  • Does not disrupt the learning environment
  • Does not pose a risk to people, property, or the campus community

If removal is necessary, the student may remain on campus and continue participating in classes and activities without the animal. SAAS can assist in identifying support if needed.

When an Animal May Be Removed

  • The dog is not housebroken
  • The dog is not under the supervision of the owner
  • The dog is out of control or disruptive
  • The animal's behavior poses a threat or safety concern

If removal is necessary, the student may remain on campus and continue participating in classes and activities without the animal. SAAS can assist in identifying alternative support if needed.
