Art Gallery

The Joe McCauley Art Gallery at Heartland Community College supports art as a catalyst for thoughtful dialogue that connects artistic expression to broader cultural contexts.

Our gallery serves to celebrate the life of Joe McCauley (1952–2009), a member of the College's original faculty. During his 18-year career at Heartland, Joe taught thousands of students with his unique perspectives on art and life.

The gallery provides a shared cultural space where diverse art experiences enrich the lives of students, Heartland employees, and members of the larger community.

Child Development Lab (CDL)

As a lab school, the CDL also provides opportunities for early childhood students needing first-hand experience working with young children.

Information About Our Observations Application Process (CDL)

Step 1: Faculty or students wishing to utilize the Heartland Community College Child Development Lab as an observation site must read, sign, and submit the following three forms to childlab@heartland.edu.

Step 2: Once you submit the required paperwork, your application will be reviewed and either approved or denied. Application review and scheduling typically take one to two weeks.

CreatiVets at Heartland

ART 296: CreatiVets: Intro to Studio Art

Credits: 1 Credit
Lab Hours: 2 hours
Meeting Time: 1:00–4:50 PM on Tuesdays
8-week semester
Section 01 – meets August 18–October 10
Section 02 – meets October 13–December 5
(Students can take both classes)

Making art can help reduce the stress and anxiety that may come with military service and can give veterans the chance to tell their story in a safe and supportive environment.

Course Description

This course, developed in consultation with CreatiVets, provides a space where veterans of the U.S. military can explore their experiences through artmaking.

Students will learn the fundamentals of working hands-on in selected media, which may include collage, sculpture, ceramics, photography, painting, and drawing. The course covers concepts of art creation, historical and contemporary visual culture, and the creative process. Using these approaches, students will examine and express their experiences of military service, with an emphasis on process, exploration, and peer and instructor discussion. This course may be repeated for credit. It meets 4 hours per week for 1 credit in 8-week sessions. Studio safety is covered.

Innovation in LASS

The LASS Innovation Grant is dedicated to advancing new and innovative curriculum, teaching methodologies, pedagogy, and student learning experiences within HCC's Liberal Arts and Social Sciences division.

Our faculty and staff are filled with original, forward-thinking ideas on education and student learning. This grant provides the financial support necessary for faculty to grow these ideas, elevating the impact and relevance of the LASS curriculum not only within HCC but also in the broader community.
