Heartland Community College in partnership with McLean County Circuit Clerk offers a four-hour defensive driving course and an eight-hour defensive driving course.

Eight-Hour McLean County Citations

  • Wait 1 to 4 weeks to receive an email and a letter from the Traffic Safety School at Heartland Community College containing your assigned class date. 
  • If you cannot attend your assigned class date, we will reschedule you at no charge before your grace period date that appears in your class confirmation letter. After the grace period, the fee to reschedule is $35. Call to reschedule. 
  • All 8-hr classes are held on Heartland’s Normal campus. 
  • Attend your class and receive a completion certificate. 
  • Heartland Community College reports your completion to the County. 

Out of County Citations

  • Verify our online course is accepted by your county. 
  • Call us to enroll in our 4-hr online class (309) 268-8159. A $65 fee will be collected at the time of registration. 
  • Please have your ticket and driver’s license information available. 
  • It is your responsibility to send your certificate of completion to the county in which you received your citation.  

Completion Guidelines

The McLean County Circuit Court requires that you complete your traffic safety school class at least 30 days before your supervision termination date. Failure to complete your class at least 30 days BEFORE your supervision termination date will result in a conviction being placed on your record. The court may determine a different date. Please check your court documents for your supervision date.

How often is the eight-hour class?

  • Eight-hour classes are held on Heartland's campus six times per year.

What if I want to take the course somewhere else?

  • It is your responsibility to find a National Safety Council defensive driving course of the same length that you were assigned.
  • Fees paid to McLean County are nonrefundable.
  • You must mail the ORIGINAL certificate of completion to our office no later than 30 days before your termination date. Failure to verify the completion of your class will result in a conviction being placed on your record.

How will I know where my eight-hour class is being held?

  • You will receive an email and a letter in the mail that will include the time, classroom, and a campus map. All classes are held on the Normal campus.

What if I need to reschedule?

  • Please call 309-268-8159 to discuss your options.

I completed my class; how do I get my completion certification?

  • For four-hour classes, your certificate can be downloaded at the time of completion and accessed through your National Safety Council account.
  • For eight-hour classes, you will be given your certificate at the end of class.
  • Heartland Community College will report your completion to the County Clerk. It is recommended that you keep your completion certificate in case it is requested by the Circuit Court.

Can the online four-hour Driver Safety Course be accessed from more than one computer, for example a home, work, or library computer?

  • Yes. You can access the course from any computer that meets the minimum system requirements. You can begin the course on one computer and continue the course from another device as long as you have your login ID and password.
  • It is not recommended to complete this course on a cellphone.

Can I get a refund?

  • No, it is your responsibility to determine your eligibility.

How does the four-hour online class work?

  • Traffic Safety School will email you a unique access code and a link to login. You will use the access code to create a login ID and password.
